Clearing the Way for a Remodel
Interior demolition is the first step of most remodels: cabinets, counters, tile, drywall, flooring and fixtures removed so the new work can start on bare framing. It is also called selective demolition, because the goal is to take out only what the plan calls for and leave the structure, the rest of the house and often the homeowner's furniture untouched.
Typical jobs
- Kitchens: cabinets, counters, backsplash, flooring, soffits and sometimes a wall to open the room
- Bathrooms: tub or shower, tile walls and floors, vanity, toilet and the old mortar bed
- Basements: framing, drywall, carpet and drop ceilings from an old finish job, often after water damage
- Whole-house guts: everything down to studs and joists on a house getting a full renovation
- Flooring: carpet, vinyl, glued-down tile and hardwood
We cap or flag plumbing and electrical so your trades can find them, and we leave framing, subfloor and anything marked to stay in place.
Walls that hold the house up
Taking out a wall is one of the most common interior demolition requests and the one that most needs a plan. Bearing walls carry floor or roof loads, and removing one needs an engineer's or builder's design for a beam and posts, plus a building permit. We remove non-bearing partitions and leave bearing walls in place until the support is designed and permitted.
Older Atlanta homes need extra care
Point2Homes' Census summary shows about 43 percent of Atlanta homes were built before 1980. In those houses, paint can contain lead and materials such as floor tile, mastic, joint compound and pipe insulation can contain asbestos. The EPA's Renovation, Repair and Painting rule requires certified firms and trained workers for paid work that disturbs paint in pre-1978 homes. We plan for lead-safe containment where it applies and recommend an asbestos test on suspect materials before they are disturbed, because a positive result means a licensed abatement crew does that part first.
Keeping the rest of the house clean
Most interior demolition happens with people still living in the house. We seal off the work area with plastic, cover floors on the path to the door, run debris straight out to a dumpster or trailer, and clean up at the end of each day. Hot, humid Atlanta summers matter here too: open walls and crawlspaces let in moisture, so we keep exterior openings closed and coordinate with your contractor on how long walls stay open.
Commercial strip-outs
The same work scales up for office suites, retail spaces and restaurants being cleared for a new tenant. See our commercial demolition page for how those jobs are planned and permitted.

Interior Demolition Questions
Can you take out the wall between my kitchen and living room?
If it is a non-bearing wall, yes, usually in a day. If it carries floor or roof load, it needs a designed beam and a permit first, and we leave it standing until that is in place. We can usually tell which you have on the walk-through, and we will say when an engineer should confirm.
Do I need a permit for interior demolition?
It depends on the work. Removing finishes for a remodel is often covered under the remodel's building permit, while structural changes always need one. We check with your city or county and with your contractor so the demolition fits the permitted plan.
Will there be dust everywhere?
Some dust is unavoidable, but we keep it in the work area with plastic sheeting and zip doors, cover the path to the exit and clean daily. On pre-1978 homes we use lead-safe practices where painted surfaces are disturbed.
Can you save my cabinets for reuse?
Yes. Tell us before we start and we will remove them carefully and set them aside or load them for donation. Cabinets glued or built in place do not always come out intact, and we will tell you if that is the case.
